Linear Actuator for AGV & AMR Robots: The 2026 OEM Engineering Guide

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are reshaping warehouses, factories, and fulfillment centers. Behind nearly every lifting, tilting, or docking motion on these robots sits a compact, reliable electric linear actuator.

For robotics OEMs, the actuator is a make-or-break component: it has to be light, energy-efficient, precise, and durable enough to run thousands of cycles a day on battery power.

Where Linear Actuators Are Used in Mobile Robots

Understanding the motion function determines your spec. The most common actuator applications on AGVs and AMRs:

  • Lift / hoist mechanisms — raising a payload, shelf, or pallet (the classic "goods-to-person" lift)
  • Tilt and dump platforms — sortation robots that tip parcels into chutes
  • Latching / docking — engaging with carts, conveyors, or charging stations
  • Height adjustment — adapting deck height to different load stations
  • Stabilizer / outrigger deployment — for high-lift or heavy-payload robots

Each function has different force, stroke, and speed needs — define the motion before you spec the part.

The 6 Specs That Matter for AGV/AMR Actuators

1. Force (Payload + Safety Factor)

Size the actuator to the payload plus the weight of the moving structure, then apply a 1.5–2× safety factor. AGV lift loads vary widely:

  • Light bin/shelf AMRs: 500–2,000N
  • Pallet-class and heavy-shelf AGVs: 4,000–10,000N+

JDR fit: Our range spans light-load models up to 16,000N heavy-duty units, covering the full AGV/AMR spectrum.

2. Stroke Length

Mobile robots are space-constrained. You usually need meaningful travel in a short retracted length. Define your required lift height precisely and look for a high stroke-to-length ratio. Compact and short-body designs are often essential.

3. Speed

Throughput depends on cycle time. Lift actuators commonly run 5–50 mm/s; faster cycles raise current draw, so balance speed against your battery budget.

JDR fit: Our high-speed models reach up to 133 mm/s, with slower high-force options for heavy lifts.

4. Voltage (Battery Compatibility)

AGVs and AMRs run on DC battery systems — typically 24V or 48V. Match the actuator voltage to the robot bus to avoid converters that waste energy and space.

JDR fit: 12–48VDC across the range, so it drops directly onto standard robot power systems.

5. Position Feedback & Control

Autonomous robots need to know exact actuator position for safe, repeatable motion. Specify:

  • Hall-effect feedback for closed-loop position control
  • CAN bus / J1939 integration for smart actuators that talk directly to the robot controller — reducing wiring and enabling diagnostics

JDR fit: Optional Hall-effect feedback and smart-control integration for closed-loop robotic motion.

6. Duty Cycle & Lifespan

A fulfillment AGV may cycle its lift thousands of times per shift. Demand a high-duty-cycle design with a durable gear train, quality motor, and — where uptime is critical — consider brushless (BLDC) motors for longer service life and lower maintenance.
