What is a Linear Actuator? How Do They Work?
March 24, 2026

Have you ever wondered what powers the smooth, automated movement in a hospital bed, an adjustable standing desk, or an industrial robot arm? The answer often lies in a compact yet powerful device called a linear actuator. If you're asking "what is a linear actuator?" or "how does a linear actuator work?", you've come to the right place. This guide will break down the fundamentals, explain the technology, and show you how to leverage this motion for your projects.

What is a Linear Actuator?

A linear actuator is a device that converts rotational motion from a motor into precise, straight-line (linear) push or pull movement. Think of it as the "muscle" of automation. Unlike a standard rotating motor, its output is a controlled extension and retraction along a single axis.

The core components of a typical electric linear actuator include:

  • Electric Motor: The power source (often 12V DC, 24V DC, or AC).

  • Gearbox: Reduces the motor's high speed to increase output torque.

  • Lead Screw or Ball Screw: Converts the rotational motion of the gearbox into linear motion. The nut travels along the screw, extending or retracting the rod.

  • Rod (or Ram): The part that extends outward to deliver the force.

  • Housing: Protects the internal components.

  • Limit Switches: Automatically stop the motor at the end of the stroke to prevent damage.

How Does a Linear Actuator Work?

The working principle is elegantly simple. When power is supplied to the motor, it spins. This rotation is slowed down and strengthened by the gearbox. The output shaft of the gearbox then turns the lead screw. As the lead screw rotates, the nut (which is prevented from rotating) is driven along the screw's threads. This nut is connected to the rod, causing it to move linearly in or out. Reversing the motor's polarity reverses the direction of travel.

Main Types of Linear Actuators

While electric actuators are the most common, several technologies exist. Choosing the right type depends on your application's needs for force, speed, precision, and environment.

TypePower SourceKey CharacteristicsBest For
ElectricElectricityClean, quiet, precise control, easy to automate and integrate with controllers. Wide range of force and speed. Most common. Automation, robotics, medical devices, home furniture, industrial machinery, agriculture.
HydraulicPressurized FluidExtremely high force capabilities, robust for heavy loads. Can be complex, with risk of fluid leaks.Heavy construction equipment, large industrial presses, applications requiring immense force.
PneumaticCompressed AirVery fast movement, simple design, explosion-proof. Less precise, requires an air compressor.Packaging machinery, factory automation where speed is critical and precision is secondary.

For most modern automation projects, from ergonomic furniture to precision medical equipment, electric linear actuators offer the best balance of performance, control, and cleanliness.

Key Performance Parameters

When selecting an actuator, you must match its specifications to your application's demands. Here are the critical parameters:

ParameterDescriptionWhy It Matters
Force/ThrustThe push/pull capacity (in Newtons or lbs).Must exceed the total load in your system, including friction and any acceleration forces.
Stroke LengthThe total travel distance of the rod.Defines how far your application needs to move.
SpeedHow fast the rod extends/retracts (mm/s or in/s).Impacts cycle time. Note: Higher speed often means lower force for the same motor power.
Duty CycleThe ratio of "on" time to total time.Prevents overheating. A 25% duty cycle means it can run for 15 seconds per minute.
VoltageCommon options: 12V DC, 24V DC, 110/220V AC.Determines your power supply needs. DC is common for mobile/battery-operated systems.

How to Choose the Right Linear Actuator?

1.Define Your Need: What are you trying to move? How far? How fast? How often?

2.Calculate Load & Force: Account for the weight, orientation, and any additional resistance.

3.Determine Stroke & Speed: Measure the required travel distance and desired cycle time.

4.Consider the Environment: Will it be used indoors, outdoors, or in a sterile medical setting? This affects the need for IP-rated waterproofing or special materials.

5.Mounting & Control: Check the mounting options (clevis, trunnion) and decide on control complexity (simple switch, PWM controller, or feedback system with hall effect sensors).

If this seems complex, don't worry. Our detailed guide on How to Choose the Perfect Linear Actuator for Your Application dives deeper into these selection criteria.
