This is where most conversions succeed or fail. The trap: a deck's weight is not the actuator force you need. The deck hangs off a pivoting lift arm, and depending on where the actuator mounts and at what angle, it can see two to three times the deck's actual weight. The same deck can call for a modest actuator in one layout and a much larger one in another — the geometry decides.
Size it properly before you buy: calculate the required dynamic force from deck weight, lift-arm geometry (the sin θ leverage effect), a friction factor, and a safety factor; then determine stroke from the eye-to-eye travel between full-up and full-down deck positions. An actuator is built to push and pull along its own axis — not sideways. The most common mechanical killer in a conversion is side load: a bracket that twists or misaligns the actuator so the rod takes a bending force it was never designed for, which wears the bushings and bends the rod.

Most decks lift cleanly on a single actuator at the main lift pivot — the simplest, cheapest, most reliable layout. A dual-actuator setup is only worth it on a wide or heavy deck that lifts unevenly, or where a builder wants balanced force at both sides. The catch: two actuators must move in sync, or the deck racks and binds. Yes. An electric linear actuator replaces the pedal or hydraulic cylinder, driven by a switch and relay off the mower's 12V/24V system. The main work is sizing the actuator to the deck, mounting it without side load, and wiring the switch, relay, and fuse safely.
Size it from the deck weight and the lift-arm geometry, not the weight alone — leverage and mounting angle can make the required force two to three times the deck's weight.
