If you build facial beds, salon chairs, pedicure stations or aesthetic treatment chairs, the actuator is no longer a bought-out commodity part. It is the component that decides whether your equipment passes accessibility requirements, survives a disinfectant washdown, and keeps a luxury spa's treatment room quiet enough to sell a $300 service. This guide is written for the people who build that equipment ― furniture OEM engineers, ODM programme managers, and purchasing leads ― not for salon owners buying a finished chair. It covers what force and stroke each equipment class actually needs, which certifications matter in which market, and how to specify and source an actuator system without a twelve-month qualification cycle.
Three independent forces are pushing electric actuation into beauty and aesthetic furniture at the same time.
The medical spa boom. Grand View Research valued the global medical spa market at US 78.2 billion by 2033 at a 15.77% CAGR (Grand View Research). Med-spas are chain-operated, capital-funded, and buy equipment in fleets ― which pushes furniture makers toward higher-specification, multi-axis electric platforms.
Equipment electrification. WiseGuy Reports sizes the global electric massage table market at roughly US 2.5 billion by 2035 (WiseGuy Reports). Growth here is not just volume ― it is manual and hydraulic tables being replaced by electric ones. Accessibility regulation in North America. The U.S.
Access Board issued a final rule on 25 July 2024 specifying a 17-inch low transfer height for medical diagnostic equipment, removing the earlier 17‒19 inch range, effective 23 September 2024 (U.S. Access Board). This turns "how low can your table go" into a procurement filter ― and a fixed-height or short-stroke design simply loses the bid.
Note on data: these are third-party forecasts and different research houses use different scopes. Treat them as directional market sizing, not as a substitute for your own demand planning.
The single biggest sourcing mistake is treating "a beauty bed actuator" as one part number. A tattoo chair and a hair-transplant chair share almost nothing in their load and duty profile.

Two things in this table are commonly under-specified and cause field failures:
Stroke on lift columns. A 300 mm stroke gets you a nice-looking table. It does not get you from a 17-inch transfer height up to a comfortable 32-inch working height while clearing the base structure. Accessibility-driven designs need long-stroke lift columns, and that requirement has to be set at concept stage ― you cannot retrofit stroke into a finished frame.
Ingress protection in wet areas. IPX4 is splash resistance. IPX6 is defined in IEC 60529 as protection against powerful water jets, tested with a 12.5 mm nozzle at 100 litres per minute for a minimum of three minutes. A pedicure basin surround or a disinfectant-wiped med-spa chair is a different environment from a dry facial bed, and the housing spec should reflect it.
Actuator force ratings are static push/pull figures. Your real requirement is a moment calculation: patient weight plus the furniture's own moving mass, multiplied by the lever arm of your mounting geometry, at the least favourable angle in the travel range.
Practical rules from beauty-furniture projects:

Most DC linear actuators in this class, including the JDR range, are rated at a 10% duty cycle: 2 minutes on, 18 minutes off. That figure is published on every JDR product page, and it is not a marketing number ― it is a thermal limit.
A treatment chair in a busy clinic cycling every eight minutes across a ten-hour day will exceed a 10% duty assumption. When it does, the motor windings run hot, lubricant degrades, and the failure shows up as a warranty claim in month fourteen. If your equipment is destined for high-throughput clinical use, say so at the enquiry stage so the duty profile can be engineered rather than assumed.
High-end European spa brands routinely specify full-load noise below 46‒48 dB. This is not a comfort nicety; it is a purchasing criterion, because a whining actuator is audible in a treatment room designed for relaxation and it generates end-customer complaints that come straight back to the furniture maker.
Motor technology is the main lever. A brushless motor system runs with lower vibration and less audible noise than a comparable brushed unit ― the FY011CR uses a brushless system for exactly this reason, at 3,500 N with IP65 protection. For compact, low-noise axes such as headrests and armrests, the FY022 mini actuator is designed specifically for low-noise applications, rated 2,000 N with IP65.
This is where sourcing conversations most often go wrong, so be precise about it.
CE and UL apply to the actuator as a component, and JDR actuators carry CE and UL marks. That is real and verifiable.
IEC 60601-1 is a standard for medical electrical equipment ― it is assessed at the finished-device level. A component supplier can supply an actuator engineered and documented to support your 60601-1 evaluation. No supplier can hand you a "60601-1 certified actuator" that makes your finished chair compliant by itself. If a vendor claims otherwise, that is a warning sign about the rest of their documentation.
Accessibility standards (the MDE rules discussed above) apply to the finished diagnostic equipment, not the actuator. But they translate directly into a stroke and low-height requirement you must impose on the actuator.

A note on reading IP ratings honestly: several models in the standard range are IP43 or IP20. Those are appropriate for enclosed, dry furniture and inappropriate for a pedicure basin. Match the rating to the environment rather than defaulting to the highest number, and ask about sealed variants where your application needs one.
Furniture OEMs that get good actuator outcomes send a specification, not a part number request. Include:
1.Load per axis, with the geometry sketch and the worst-case angle
2.Stroke required, plus retracted length constraint (this is usually the binding limit)
3.Duty profile ― realistic cycles per hour in the end customer's operation
4.Environment ― dry, splash, or disinfectant washdown
5.Noise target in dB at full load
6.Control architecture ― number of synchronised axes, position memory, foot control, emergency lowering
7.Target market so the certification set is right from the start
8.Annual volume and MOQ expectation
