Cleaning robots put water, detergent and grit exactly where their actuators live. So ingress protection (IP) is not a checkbox —it is the difference between an actuator that lasts the machine's service life and one that fails in the field. This guide explains what IP66 and IP69K actually mean, and how to match the rating to your robot without over-spending.

An IP code has two digits. The first rates protection against solids and dust (0–6, where 6 is fully dust-tight). The second rates protection against water (0–9K). The higher the numbers, the more sealed the device. For cleaning robots, both digits matter: dust and grit are abrasive, and water/detergent is constant.
The jump from IP66 to IP69K is about surviving aggressive washdown, not just splashes — which is why it matters most for machines that get cleaned with pressure washers or work outdoors.
A scrubber deliberately dispenses cleaning solution onto the floor; a sweeper kicks up dust and grit. Suppliers describe these machines as operating where "dust, dirt and other solid contaminant levels are high," and offer IP69K to suit "even the most demanding environments" (TiMOTION sweepers/scrubbers application page). Three exposures drive the rating:
For a robotic scrubber that works on indoor floors and is wiped or lightly rinsed during service, IP66 is usually an appropriate baseline — fully dust-tight with strong jet protection. The actuators still sit near water and detergent, so going below IP66 is risky. If the machine is periodically pressure-washed, step up to IP69K.
Outdoor sweepers face rain, road grit and pressure-wash cleaning. Even when the robot chassis is rated around IP54–IP55 (e.g. Gausium Beetle 2.0 / MAX-SW), the actuators are directly exposed and benefit from the highest protection. For outdoor duty and any washdown scenario, IP69K is the safe choice (TiMOTION sweepers/scrubbers application page). IP rating covers ingress, not chemistry. Cleaning detergents and outdoor road chemicals (salt, de-icers) are corrosive over time. So pair the right IP rating with:
A high IP number on a corrosion-prone body will still fail — specify both.
Higher protection costs more, so match the rating to real exposure:

Over-spec'ing every actuator to IP69K inflates cost; under-spec'ing causes field failures. Map each actuated function to its true exposure and rate accordingly.
