Every winter, the North American snowplow market keeps growing. Industry analysts at Future Market Insights project the North American snowplow segment to expand from 0.7 billion in 2025 to 1.3 billion by 2035 (CAGR 6.2%), while the US & Canada truck-mounted plow market alone was valued at 397.8 million in 2024,rising to a projected 524.3 million by 2032 (Verified Market Research). Behind almost every modern plow blade that rises, lowers, or angles at the push of a button, there is one of three motion technologies: a winch, a hydraulic cylinder, or — increasingly — an electric or electro-hydraulic linear actuator.
This guide is written for plow OEMs, upfitters, dealers, repair shops, and serious end users. It explains where actuators fit on a snow plow, how the market is shifting from winches and open hydraulics toward sealed electric actuation, what specifications actually matter, and how to source the right unit — including where JDR's electro-hydraulic FY023 actuator fits.
A powered snow plow has up to three motion points, and an actuator can drive each of them.
The most common position. A DC actuator replaces the winch-and-cable setup, giving a positive mechanical connection — the actuator both pushes and pulls. That means down pressure for back-dragging and cleaner scraping of compacted snow, something a winch cable physically cannot provide because a cable can only pull the blade up while gravity does the lowering. Plow owners discuss this limitation repeatedly on PlowSite and Can-Am forums.
One or two actuators rotate the blade to cast snow left or right without the operator leaving the cab. DIY builders on MyTractorForum report running a lift actuator plus an angling actuator each drawing under 5 amps in operation — a fraction of the current spikes a winch can pull.
On tractor- and UTV-mounted snow blowers, compact actuators (roughly 200–500 N) rotate the discharge chute and adjust the deflector angle. This is a lighter-duty application than blade lift, but it belongs on the same sourcing roadmap.
The plow attachment market is not homogeneous. It splits cleanly into three tiers by vehicle class — and each tier has settled on a different motion technology.

This is the fast-growing middle tier — and it is where JDR's FY023 belongs. KFI's ACT203 and SuperATV's Plow Pro angle kit use 12V electric-over-hydraulic cylinders: a self-contained unit that combines an electric motor, a pump and a hydraulic cylinder in one sealed body. They deliver more force than a screw-driven electric actuator without the external pump, hoses and reservoir of a full hydraulic system. (KFI notes its ACT203 hydraulic system is sealed and should only be serviced by the manufacturer.)
BOSS, Western and Meyer commercial truck plows still run full, open hydraulics for extreme duty cycles — separate pump, hoses and fluid reservoir.
The takeaway: the residential and ATV/UTV segments — the fastest-growing part of the attachment market — have standardized on electric and electro-hydraulic actuation. For plow OEMs, that makes actuator sourcing a core BOM decision, not an afterthought. BOSS Products' own buyer's guide for contractors lists the winch cable as the system's greatest weakness: water and ice freeze the line inside the spool, road salt corrodes it, and slack causes tangles. A sealed actuator eliminates that failure mode entirely. This is where a high ingress-protection rating matters — JDR's FY023 is rated IP67 (dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion), suited to salt spray and pressure washing.
BOSS also warns that holding a winch button at full lift can spike current above 200 amps, stressing the battery and charging system. Actuators draw far less in normal operation. Note, however, an honest engineering caveat: end-of-stroke protection depends on the unit — some electric actuators include internal limit switches, but JDR's FY023 does not, so the plow's controller/wiring must handle end-of-travel sensing or current limiting. You need enough thrust to lift the blade under a snow load and to hold down-pressure for back-dragging. Most ATV/UTV and light-truck blades are served by roughly 2,000–8,000 N. FY023 delivers 8,000 N (≈1,800 lbf), sitting at the top of that band for heavier blades.
Winter plowing means brine, slush and pressure-washing. Specify IP66 as a minimum; IP67 adds temporary-immersion protection. FY023 is IP67.
Stroke must match the plow's lift/angle linkage. FY023 offers 150–350 mm (≈6"–13.8"). Remember the mounting envelope: the retracted length follows Lmin = stroke + 130 mm, so confirm your closed-length clearance early.
12V DC is the ATV/UTV standard; FY023 also supports 24V and 48V, useful for larger or industrial machines. Field users report lift and angle actuators each pulling under 5 A in operation (MyTractorForum) — but expect current to climb in the cold (see below).
Plowing is a repeated cycle of short lift/angle actuations, not continuous running. FY023 is rated 10% duty (2 min on / 18 min off), which fits actuation-style plow use. Do not spec it for a continuously running application.
Linear actuators can draw substantially more current in freezing temperatures (a rise on the order of +50% is commonly cited) as grease and fluid viscosity increase. Specify low-temperature grease/fluid and confirm the rated operating range before winter deployment. FY023 is rated for −20°C to 65°C — a wide window that directly answers the cold-start concern winter buyers always raise.

Yes. A DC linear or electro-hydraulic actuator is the standard lift mechanism on modern residential and ATV/UTV plows, replacing the older winch-and-cable design and adding down pressure for back-dragging.
